Something fundamental changed in how people find businesses. It didn't happen overnight, but by mid-2025 it was impossible to ignore: a growing percentage of commercial searches are no longer returning a list of links. They're returning answers.
Google AI Overviews. Perplexity. Bing Copilot. These platforms don't rank your page — they summarise it, cite it, or ignore it entirely. And if your content isn't structured to be surfaced in those summaries, you don't exist in that channel — even if you rank on page one of traditional search.
That's what AEO is about. And why most businesses have never heard of it despite being affected by it every day.
What is AEO?
Answer Engine Optimization is the practice of structuring your content so that AI-powered answer engines can extract, understand, and surface your business in direct answers to user queries.
Traditional SEO asks: "How do I rank higher in a list of search results?"
AEO asks: "How do I become the answer?"
The distinction sounds subtle. It isn't. When a user searches "best digital marketing agency Ontario" on a traditional search engine, they get ten blue links. When they ask the same question through Google AI Overviews or Perplexity, they get a paragraph — sourced from a handful of pages that answered the question clearly, authoritatively, and in a format the AI could parse.
The key insight: Answer engines don't just reward authority — they reward clarity and structure. A well-structured answer from a mid-authority site can beat a poorly structured response from a high-authority competitor.
Why most businesses are invisible in AI search
Most websites were built to rank, not to answer. Their content is written for humans browsing a page — not for AI systems extracting a direct response to a specific question. That content structure, perfectly adequate for 2020-era search, is largely invisible to answer engines.
The specific problems are almost always the same:
- No FAQ sections or structured Q&A content that maps to how customers actually ask questions
- No schema markup helping search engines understand what the page is about and who it's for
- Paragraphs that bury the answer — rather than leading with it
- No clear entity signals telling AI systems what the business is, where it operates, and what it does
- Content written to impress, not to explain
How to fix it: the AEO fundamentals
1. Answer questions before explaining them
AI systems extract the first clear, direct statement that addresses a query. Lead every section with the answer. Follow with the context. This is the opposite of how most business website copy is written.
2. Build FAQ content around real search queries
FAQs aren't just a page feature — they're one of the most consistently surfaced content formats in AI answers. Use tools like AnswerThePublic or your own Google Search Console data to identify the actual questions your customers are asking, then answer them clearly and concisely.
3. Implement structured data (schema markup)
Schema markup is machine-readable metadata that tells search and answer engines what your page is about. At minimum: Organization, LocalBusiness, FAQPage, and Service schemas. These are directly used by Google AI Overviews and Perplexity to surface businesses in relevant answers.
4. Build entity authority
AI systems use a concept called entity recognition to understand who you are. Make sure your business name, location, services, and expertise signals are consistent and clearly stated across your website, Google Business Profile, and any third-party mentions. Inconsistency is a visibility killer.
5. Audit your current AI visibility
Before you can fix anything, you need to know where you stand. Search for the key questions your customers ask across Google, Perplexity, and ChatGPT. Does your business appear? If not — that's the gap AEO fills.
The bottom line: AEO isn't replacing SEO. It's an additional layer of visibility work that reflects how search actually works in 2026. Businesses that build for both will be visible in more places than competitors who only optimise for one.
